In a game to mark the opening of the club's new floodlights, Gary Speed got the only goal of the game in the sixty-fourth minute. He had been one of several Half-Time substitutions as United sent on Mark Beeney in goal for John Lukic, Andy Couzens at Right Back for Gary Kelly, Rod Wallace for Brian Deane at Centre Forward, Mark Tinkler for Gary McAllister at Inside Left and Gary Speed for Noel Whelan at Outside Left. For Cork City, Pat Kenneally replaced Declan Daly after ten minutes, O. Daly came on for K. O'Rourke after twenty-five minutes and then a double change was made in the seventieth minute with Lynch replacing Stephen Napier and Alex Ludzic for Cormac Cotter.
